Overview Itinerary
The Ship
The Viking Ocean Cruises' fleet welcomed Viking Orion in 2018. This award-winning and intimate all-veranda ship cruises around the Mediterranean, Alaska, the Far East, Southeast Asia, Australia, India, and beyond with a maximum of 930 guests aboard. Viking Orion's ten passenger decks are lined with international dining venues, vibrant bars and peaceful lounges, a stunning two storey atrium, pool area with retractable roof, lanai, and hot tub, a fun sports deck, serene spa, and multi-purpose theatre. Each of the staterooms and suites feature a veranda with ocean views, a 42-inch flat-screen LCD TV, minibar with soft drinks, water, and snacks, luxury robes and slippers, 24-hour room service, Wi-Fi access, and a large bathroom with walk-in shower and premium Freya toiletries. Viking Orion also docks at amazing ports of call, where you can join a guided shore excursion or explore independently.

The Restaurant serves a menu of daily-changing dishes and chef's specials. Discover round-the-world flavours including American classics, Chinese fare, European cuisine, Japanese sushi, and much more in the casual World Café; enjoy alfresco dining in the evening at the adjoining Aquavit Terrace. Mamsen's, at the heart of Explorers' Lounge, serves a selection of Norwegian-inspired dishes including pastries, cakes, waffles, sandwiches, and late-night soups. Feast on open-air, freshly-cooked burgers and pizzas at The Pool Grill or savour a traditional afternoon tea and light bites in the Scandinavian-style The Wintergarden. Rustic Tuscan dishes are served in Manfredi's Italian Restaurant. Book into The Chef's Table to sample a destination-inspired multi-course tasting menu with paired wines. 24-hour room service and private dining are also available on request.

Relax with a freshly-brewed coffee or a glass of aquavit or craft beer as you take in the views from the two-deck-high Explorers' Lounge. Sip ice-cold drinks just steps from the water's edge at Pool Bar or enjoy alfresco tropical cocktails on Aquavit Terrace. Viking Bar is the perfect place for pre-dinner drinks, people-watching, and socialising with new-found friend until late. Complimentary speciality coffees, teas, and bottle water are available 24 hours a day. Welcome Cocktails and a Farewell Reception plus beer, wine, and soft drinks with both lunch and dinner are also included at no extra cost.

Invigorate your circulation in the snow grotto and sauna at The Spa or kickback in the hot tub by the Main Pool. Take an invigorating stroll around the 360-degree promenade deck or join in the fun at the Sports Deck. The Kitchen Table offers an optional interactive culinary journey with shopping/cooking events with world-class chefs on days in port and cooking classes on days at sea. The Viking Cruise's Enrichment Program features world-class lectures on art and history, wine tastings, and traditional performances and music acts; many of which can be enjoyed - alongside destination-driven movies - from the comfort of an armchair in The Theater. Visit The Living Room for music from the pianist at the Steinway piano. Torshavn nightspot is perfect for night owls with live music and late-night dancing to the resident band.
Day 1: UK – Vancouver, Canada
Fly from your chosen UK airport to Vancouver, Canada and be transferred to the cruise port ready to begin your Alaska & the Inside Passage cruise
Day 2: Scenic Cruising – Inside Passage
Today, Viking Orion charts a steady course through the Inside Passage. The Inside Passage is one of Alaska's most picturesque waterways that wends its way through a fjord-like network of emerald isles and snow-capped mountains on the Pacific coast of North America. The route travels from south-eastern Alaska through western British Columbia to north-western Washington state. Soak up the amazing scenery as the ship navigates the Strait of Georgia, the Seymour Narrows, and the Granville Channel. Continue on past steep cliffs covered in rainforest; keeping your eyes peeled for dolphins, whales, and orcas in the water and bald eagles, gulls and cormorants in the skies above your head.
Day 3: Ketchikan, United States
Ketchikan can be described as the first city of Alaska. Situated in the most southern part of the state and surrounded by deep fjords and lush forests, this small fishing town is a popular stop with cruise lines. Take a walk down the waterfront and admire the awe-inspiring views. Enjoy a tour to the 40-acre Alaska Rainforest Sanctuary to view bald eagles and black bears. Visit the totem poles at Totem Bight State Park and Potlatch Totem Park or journey to the glacier-carved wilderness at the Misty Fiords National Monument. You can also ride an off-road vehicle and try zip lining, kayaking and hiking.
Day 4: Sitka, United States
Sitka is situated on the seaward side of the Inside Passage. This former capital of the first Imperial Russian settlers in Alaska is one of the most picturesque seaside towns in the state. For centuries Sitka has also been home to the Tlingit Indians with their heritage brought to life in Sitka National Historical Park, the adjacent Sitka Cultural Centre, and the many hand-crafted totem poles that line the rainforest pathways. Admire the onion-shaped domes of St Michael's Cathedral or join a fishing tour in search of halibut and salmon. Go hiking in Tongrass Rainforest, enjoy a scenic bike ride along the coastal road to Thimbleberry, or take a boat trip through the Sitka Sound.
Day 5: Juneau, United States
Juneau is the state capital of Alaska, and it is not hard for guests to see why people would want to settle here. Juneau is one of the natural beauty hotspots of the world. Take a trip to Mendenhall Glacier, one of the most awe-inspiring in the area, and yet accessible in the area. Being over half a mile wide and 2000 feet deep, this is a sight you will surely not want to miss.
Day 6: Skagway, United States
Skagway, commonly known as 'The Gateway to the Klondike' was born out of the Kondike Gold rush of the 1890s. Once home to saloons, dance halls and gambling houses, Skagway now has only about 1,000 residents. Relive the town's 'heyday' with an interesting downtown walking tour and gold panning excursion. Visit Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park to see thousands of historic photos and archaeological artefacts. For the little more adventurous, take a ride on the White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad past glistening glaciers and picturesque waterfalls.
Day 7: Icy Strait Point, United States
Icy Strait Point is located on Chichagof Island just outside the small village of Hoonah. This privately-owned resort is named after the nearby Icy Strait. Step ashore to experience authentic regional culture, incredible natural beauty and indigenous wildlife, Tlingit art and dancing, and to taste fresh Dungeness crab. Take a cruise from Icy Strait Point to get an up close view of the dramatic scenery, humpback whales and brown bears. Ride the bus to the top of Hoonah Mountain for far-reaching views, before descending on the world's largest ZipRider which soars 300 feet above the rainforest below.
Day 8: Scenic Cruising – Yakutat Bay
Scenic cruising through Yakutat Bay is on the itinerary today. This majestic body of water is 29kms wide, surrounded by snow-covered mountain slopes, and is fed by the mighty Hubbard Glacier; creating some of the most mesmerising scenery you'll encounter during your time afloat. Yakutat Bay narrows to become Disenchantment Bay; named after its Spanish discoverer who was seeking the Northwest Passage and was stopped in his tracks by the imposing Hubbard Glacier instead. Hubbard Glacier is steadily sliding into the water blocking tributary fjords and carrying ice and debris down from the St Elias Mountains.
Day 9: Valdez, United states
The ship drops anchor today in Valdez; which takes its name from Antonio Valdes y Fernandez Bazan, a Spanish Navy Minister. At one time explorers and gold seekers flocked to Valdez before it became Alaska's most northernmost ice-free port. Today, Valdez is the southern terminus of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline which carries oil south from the Arctic coast's Prudhoe Bay. A walking tour will bring to life the town's fascinating history or you can choose to set out on an excursion to see the mighty Columbia Tidal Glacier in Prince William Sound, and maybe try your hand at catching one or two of Alaska's famous salmon fish.
Day 10: Seward, United States
Seward is sandwiched between the Kenai Mountains and the waters of Kenai Fjords National Park. Boasting Mount Marathon as its dramatic backdrop, Seward is one of Alaska's oldest and most beautiful towns. The bustling harbour gives way to streets filled with charming shops and galleries. Admire puffins, sea lions and humpback whales as you take a boat tour through the fjords and glaciers of Kenai Fjords National Park. From Resurrection Bay, you can meander along the mile-long beach or trek further afield along the five-mile coastal trail to Caines Head. Take the short stroll to the accessible Exit Glacier — where you can enjoy a 'hands-on' glacier experience — before visiting marine life at Alaska SeaLife Centre.
Day 11: Seward, United States – UK
Disembark the ship and be transferred to the airport for your return flight home.
