The port village of Portovenere is situated on north-western Italy's Ligurian coastline. The village is best known for Porto Venere Regional Natural Park that takes in the beaches and caves on Palmaria Island and also a protected area of dive sites and trails. Stroll through the Town Gate and Tower and enter Portovenere's historical centre, before exploring the shops and restaurants along Via Capellini main street. Visit the 11th-century Church of San Lorenzo and admire the multi-coloured old houses along the Palazzata sea front. Walk to the rocky headland to view the Gothic-style Church of St Peter and take in the views across the Gulf of Poets from the nearby cliff top Castello Doria fortress.
