Overview Itinerary
The Ship
Viking Helgrim sailed into the Viking River Cruises' fleet in 2018 and is named after a famous Danish explorer and alleged son of King Harald. Step aboard this petite ship as she sails along Portugal's Douro River and enjoy an intimate river cruising experience with a maximum of 105 fellow passengers. Viking Torgil's four passenger decks are lined with a bar and lounge with adjoining open-air terrace, two restaurants, library, boutique, and sun deck with swimming pool, organic herb garden, and putting green. Each of the staterooms and suites feature river views, a 40-inch flat-panel TV with infotainment system and movies on demand, individual climate control, complimentary Wi-Fi Internet, and daily-replenished bottled water. The ship drops anchor most mornings at a fascinating port of call, where you can explore independently or join a guided shore excursion.

Food
Take your seat in the Restaurant and enjoy the panoramic views through the floor-to-ceiling windows as you dine on delicious and destination-focussed cuisine. The adjoining Al Fresco Restaurant is the perfect spot for open-air dining in the sunshine or under a star-filled night sky.

Drink
Relax with a book and a cup of fresh coffee in the lounge or visit the bar for a glass of wine to enjoy as you soak up the ever-changing riverside vistas. Step out onto the adjacent open-air Aquavit Terrace for al fresco drinks with friends. Enjoy wine, beers and soft drinks during lunch and dinner on board included in your cruise fare.

Entertainment
Days afloat are all about relaxing on the Sun Deck or losing yourself in a book in the library corner. Challenge your partner to a round of golf on the putting green or admire the plants on display in the organic herb garden. The Culture Curriculum brings the local area to life with history and art lectures, wine tastings, locally-inspired dining, and informative port talks. Viking's Local Life, Working World, and Privileged Access experiences also enhance your time in port. After dinner, retreat to the lounge and bar to socialise with other guests or to enjoy occasional folkloric shows and local musicians playing regional and classical music.
Day 1: Fly UK to Porto
Fly from your selected UK airport to Porto and be transferred to the port to embark on board Viking Helgrim.
Day 2: Porto, Portugal
Porto is a coastal city in the north of Portugal, most famous for its Port wine production. The city sits on a steep riverbank where you’ll find tiled 14th-century churches and 19th-century palaces. Climb the tower in Sao Francisco Church for spectacular views, or pay a visit to the impressive Palacio da Bolsa and discover its elegant interior. Soak up some of Porto’s culture with a performance at the Casa da Musica concert hall, an exhibition at the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art, or a stroll along the Cais da Ribeira.
Day 3: Régua, Portugal
Commonly known as Regua, this northern Portuguese town is drenched with sunshine. In the heart of Porto country, local wine lodges offer tours of their cellars where the vineyards roll on for miles. You won’t be disappointed if you make the effort to climb Miradouro de S Leonardo em Galafura: it offers the most stunning views of the Duoro Valley and surrounding mountains. If you’re after adrenaline, take a bike ride through the mountain trails and admire the wildlife.
Day 4: Barca d’Alva, Portugal
Barca d'Alva is the last Portuguese village along the Douro River. The village is surrounded by mountains and a long-abandoned railway line runs through it. The countryside in Barca D'Alva is very rich in agriculture, with crops such as olive groves, vineyards and almond being grown. This tiny port is your gateway to the Quinta do Seixo, a historic port wine–making facility typical of the Douro region.
Day 5: Salamanca, Spain
Located in the Spanish region known as Castilla y Leon, Salamanca is famous for its culture and lively atmosphere. Salamanca is one of Spain’s most beautiful cities due to its intricate architecture. In the heart of the city visit Plaza Mayor; a popular square lined with authentic restaurants, ice cream parlours and souvenir shops. For culture, St Stephen’s Convent and the Old Cathedral will take your breath away; they both boast stunning gothic structures and elaborate stained glass. Climb up the towers of Ieronimus Cathedral and listen to the bells ringing as you discover the picturesque city views.
Day 6: Pinhão, Portugal
Encircled by hillsides that produce some of the world’s best wines, Pinhao sits in the north of Portugal and makes a good base for exploring the local vineyards. Visit Douro Valley; this old wine-making region has traditional vineyards set along tiered stone walls running alongside the river. There is the opportunity for Port and wine tastings and tours at the popular, Quinta do Bomfim. Pinhao’s railway station is worth a visit; it offers picturesque views and boasts attractive, glazed ceramic tilework. Take a country walk along the Douro River and visit Praia Fluvial, an idyllic spot for relaxing.
Day 7: Régua, Portugal
Commonly known as Regua, this northern Portuguese town is drenched with sunshine. In the heart of Porto country, local wine lodges offer tours of their cellars where the vineyards roll on for miles. You won’t be disappointed if you make the effort to climb Miradouro de S Leonardo em Galafura: it offers the most stunning views of the Duoro Valley and surrounding mountains.
