MS Roald Amundsen sails into the Hurtigruten fleet in Spring 2019. This state-of-the-art expedition ship features new and environmentally-friendly hybrid technology and electrical power, which reduces fuel usage and CO2-emissions. Setting sail with a maximum of 530 passengers on board; you'll soon feel at home in your modern and well-equipped sea-facing cabin or suite and get to know your travelling companions and the resident crew and Expedition Team. The laid-back and friendly on-board lifestyle and the casual dress code are equally matched by the locally-inspired and tasty cuisine. The focus is very much on what you can experience ashore and the on and off ship activities. Spend your days at sea relaxing on the outdoor explorer deck and enjoying the views from the observation lounge. Work out in the fitness room and take a brisk stroll around the outdoor walking deck, before enjoying some downtime in the wellness area.
The cuisine on board is locally-sourced and made from the freshest of ingredients. Take your seat in the T Alune Main Dining restaurant at breakfast, lunch, and dinner to enjoy first-class service and a varied menu of starters, main courses, and desserts. Pay a small supplement to dine on gourmet fare in the Fredheim and Lindstrom Restaurants.
Explorer Lounge & Bar on Deck Ten is the social hub of the ship. From your morning coffee through to pre-dinner drinks and late evening nightcaps; this is the place to mix with your fellow passengers and take in the ever-changing outside views.
The entertainment on board MS Roald Amundsen is relaxed and low-key. The Expedition Team host a programme of enrichment talks and evening get-togethers; while out on deck they guide you through the points of interest, nature, and other fascinating sights. Enjoy ambient background music in the evening as you socialise with your fellow guests in the lounge and bar.
Day 1: Baja California, Mexico
Today you will board your flight from the UK to reach La Paz, the capital of Southern Baja California. On arrival you will make your way to the port of Pichilingue in preparation to board MS Roald Amundsen. After you've settled in to your stylish and comfortable guest stateroom and unpacked we recommend you visit La Paz's beautiful waterfront malecón and the historic centre around the Plaza Constitución. In the evening, you will set sail northbound for your first destination.
Day 2: Isla San José, Mexico - Mangroves & Beaches
We will land on the west side of Isla San José today, at Punta Colorada. You'll quickly discover that the landscape is full of amazing contrasts; from golden mountains that form the background for green mangroves to white sandy beaches and spectacular turquoise waters.
Day 3: Isla Santa Catalina, Mexico - Reptiles & Cactuses
You will spend your time today on an uninhabited island to the north - Isla Santa Catalina. This breathtaking place is home to several unique species of flowers and plants and is the perfect picture spot to capture memories you can treasure forever.
Day 4: Isla San Esteban, Mexico - Chuckwallas
Your next stop today is the small island on the Gulf of California near Tiburon Island - San Esteban. This marvellous place was once inhabited by the indigenous Seri people and its geographic isolation meant that this island became the habitat of many odd endemic species such as the San Esteban chuckwalla, a type of iguana.
Day 5: Loreto, Mexico - Charming Fishing Town
Your exciting itinerary brings you to the picture-perfect resort town of Loreto today. Enjoy a stroll along the charming beach promenade which will lead you to explore the town centre and its colonial buildings, quaint cobblestone streets, and fascinating history. Perhaps visit an authentic restaurant later in the day for the chance to sample some tasty local cuisine.
Day 6: Isla San Francisco, Mexico
Continue your journey southbound along the east coast of Baja California Sur and pay a visit to San Francisco Island. This small isle is a habitat for 10 different species of reptiles, with one of them being the endemic Isla San Francisco Whiptail.
Days 7-8: At sea
Spend today at sea as you sail northbound along the west coast of Baja California. Days spent at sea allow you to join the Expedition Team for the chance to listen to interesting lectures, learn the basics of expedition photography, and enjoy time out on deck to breathe in the fresh ocean air as you search for mesmerising wildlife.
Day 9: Ensenada, Mexico - Delights of the Pacific
The vibrant coastal city of Ensenada awaits you today, which offers plenty of options. Perhaps take a walk across the malecon, visit the local fresh fish market, and take the time to sample mouth-watering seafood delicacies paired with award-winning regional wines to compliment.
Day 10: San Diego, USA
The port of San Diego, California welcomes you for your final day at sea. Once you disembark here there will be leisure time to enjoy the many brilliant sights of this fascinating city. After you've finished exploring transfer to the airport and prepare for your flight back to the UK.
