Destination of the Week: Barcelona

Date posted: 12/02/20
Barcelona combines the best of both worlds…a balmy Mediterranean climate and golden beaches; equally-matched by vibrant city life and cultural attractions to explore!

Barcelona is arguably one of the most famous cities in the world. Located between the azure Mediterranean Sea and the lush Serra de Collserola hills; this cosmopolitan city on Spain’s Costa Dorada is the capital of Catalonia and is best known for its diverse art and architecture. However you decide to explore the city – on foot or aboard one of the famous red sightseeing buses – you’ll find amazing sights around every corner! Below are just a handful of the must-see highlights.

La Rambla - Your cruise line’s shuttle bus will usually drop you at the port entrance. Here you’ll be footsteps from the Christopher Columbus statue which points the way to the iconic La Rambla; the tree-shaded avenue that is the heartbeat of the city and lined with shops, restaurants, and alfresco cafes. Part way down La Rambla, you’ll come across the first of Antoni Gaudi’s masterpieces, the ostentatious Palau Guell; followed by the vibrant Mercat de la Boqueria and then Placa Catalunya at the end.

Barri Gotic - To the northeast of La Rambla is Barri Gotic (Gothic Quarter); meander through the maze of narrow cobblestone streets and alleyways, picturesque squares, pavement cafes, and unique boutiques. Visit Placa Reial with the Gaudi-designed ‘Fountain of the Three Graces’ at its centre, see the grandiose Catedral de Santa Eulalia, view the amazing artworks at the Picasso Museum, and there’s even a whole museum dedicated to chocolate, Museu de la Xocolata!

La Sagrada Familia - The UNESCO-listed Basilica de la Sagrada Familia is one of Barcelona’s most famous sights; not only can the 18 spindly towers of Antoni Gaudi’s masterwork be seen from miles around, but it has to be one of the most famous ‘unfinished’ buildings in the world. From the Nativity and Passion facades on the outside to the opulent details, colourful stained glass windows, and the unusual Crucifix of the apse inside; this whole place is awe-inspiring and totally unique.

Parc Guell - The UNESCO-listed Parc Guell is a colourful, whimsical, beautifully-landscaped, and surrealistic park; another of Antoni Gaudi’s signature designs. Gaze in wonder at the grottoes, viaducts, colonnaded hall, winding staircases, and curved seating; all decorated in multi-coloured ceramic fragments. Gaudi loved this area so much, he made his home here; nestled in colourful gardens it’s now home to Casa Museu Gaudi filled with artworks, decorated objects, and furniture designed by the man himself.

Camp Nou - And, finally, something for the guys and die-hard footie fans; not forgetting architecture fans who’ll be bowled over by the Modernista buildings, of course. Camp Nou is home to one of Spain’s top football teams, FC Barcelona. This 99,354-seater stadium is the second largest in the world and the largest in Europe. Depending on when you visit; you may be lucky enough to experience the ‘match day’ atmosphere or simply take in the stadium tour and a visit to the museum.

Food

Like any city in the world, you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to cuisine; from pizzas and pasta to curry and burgers, there’s plenty to tempt you. But you can’t visit Spain and not sample the traditional local food. Tapas are the perfect way to taste a variety of locally-inspired vegetable, meat, fish, or seafood dishes in one sitting, all accompanied by a  jug of sangria. Authentic paella is a feast in itself; rich-flavoured rice accompanied by fish, meat, and shellfish, washed down by a glass of Rioja.

Climate

Barcelona enjoys a typical Mediterranean climate, with hot summers and mild winters. From May to late September, temperatures are generally between 20◦C and 30◦C; most days are bright and sunny, with over 12 hours of daylight - conditions ideal for exploring.
