For a break from the buzz of the city, venture to Hamarikyu Gardens or take a leisurely stroll around the Imperial Palace grounds for some quiet serenity. The dishes are prepared using only the highest quality of ingredients and represent an unbroken tradition dating back to the Heian period. The maiko are very friendly and accommodating and you can also take a picture with them. Your guide will be there to assist you and translate when needed. Kobe, Japan
Kobe is a bright and contemporary city. At Meriken Park on the waterfront you can see modern art installations and fountains. Kobe is also home to iconic architecture such as the red Kobe Port Tower and the Kobe Maritime Museum. Take in the sights from the fifth floor of the Port Tower. Venture further into the city centre to see Sorakuen, a traditional Japanese landscape garden. Tuck into some Kobe beef, a tender and flavoursome meat typically served as steak. Visit Kitano-Cho and see the Gothic Victorian stone houses built above the old city, a much-visited neighbourhood on the northern edge of the city.

Kochi, Japan
Kochi is a Japanese prefecture located on Shikoki Island known for its mountains, rivers, and Pacific beaches. Pay a visit to one of Japan's best preserved feudal castles of the 1600s, Kochi-jo. Beside the castle, find Hirome Market brimming with local cuisine, unique souvenirs, and clothing boutiques. Every year, the famous Yosakoi Festival attracts hundreds with its dancers, colourful costumes, and spectacular fireworks display. The 4km limestone Ryuga Cave took 175 million years to form and is one of Japan' most historical sites. A leisurely stroll around Kochi Prefectural Makino Botanical Garden is the perfect escape. Chikurin-ji is a Shington temple founded in the early eighth century; ideal for a flavour of traditional Japanese architecture and culture.

The Japanese city of Kukuoka sits on the northern shore of Kyushu Island overlooking Hakata Bay. This is the perfect place to explore ancient temples, relax on beaches, or go shopping in modern shopping malls such as Canal City. Pay a visit to view the ruins of the 17th-century Fukuoka Castle in Maizuru Park. Explore the central Hakata district, home to the Tocho-ji Temple with its Hakata Machiya Folk Museum and a 10m-high wooden Buddha. Visit Sumiyoshi-jinja Shrine or get up close to local marine life at Marine World Uminonakamichi. Kanazawa, Japan
Kanazawa is the capital of Ishikwawa Prefecture on Japan's central Honshu Island. Famed for its well-preserved Edo-era districts, art museums, and handicrafts; the 17th-century Kenrokuen Garden is celebrated for its classic landscape designs which incorporate ponds and streams. Adjacent to this, head to Kanazawa Castle to take in its lush grounds and impressive structure. Call by Omicho Market, a local food hub with over 160 vendors serving mouth-watering culinary delights. Discover traditional teahouses and shops along Nishi Chaya District or take a stroll around Kanazawa Castle Park to appreciate the cherry blossom trees. Marvel at Oyama Shrine, take pictures, and watch the world go by as you relax next to the pond.

Vladivostok, Russia
Overlooking Golden Horn Bay in Russia, Vladivostok is a major Pacific port city. Near the borders of China and North Korea, it is known as a terminus of the Trans-Siberian Railway which links the city to Moscow - be sure to visit Vladivostok Train Station as it's one of the most beautiful buildings in the town. Experience the pebble beaches and warm waters of Popov Island and pay a visit to one of the most powerful naval fortresses in the world; Vladivostok Fortress. The dominant structure of Zolotoy Bridge with its great size and modern design is a must-see; while the S-56 Submarine is a great way to meet something the locals are really proud of. Observe large scale exhibits and animal shows at Primorsky Aquarium, known as one of the biggest aquariums in the world.

Otaru, Japan
Otaru is a port city in Japan, northwest of Sapporo on Ishikari Bay. The city is renowned for its glassworks, music boxes, and sake distilleries. Completed in 1923, the Otaru Canal is lined with cafes and shops and is the perfect stroll to discover Otaru in all its glory. Otaru Music Box Museum is the place to enjoy world music in a nostalgic atmosphere, or visit Otaru Aquarium to see unique sea life species. Otaru Tenguyama Ropeway will take you up high panoramic views of the city. Enjoy a look at th famous Japanese glassware at Otaru Taizhou Glass Palace, including handmade figurines and vases. Sample traditional Japanese whisky at Yoichi Distillery and bag yourself a bottle to bring home.

Aomori, Japan
Aomori is the capital city of Aomori Prefecture, and is located in the northern region of Japan. This stunning city is famous for its beautiful apple orchards and cherry blossoms that cover the landscape. The snow-covered Hakkoda Mountains are the perfect backdrop for this lively city. Visit the Nebuta Museum Wa Rasse which is dedicated to the city’s famous summer Nebuta Matsuri festival. Gaze in awe at the floats up close without having to jostle for a place in the festival streets. Alternatively, journey back in time and spend an afternoon at the reconstructed village at Sannai-Maruyama Ruins.

Hakodate, Japan
Hakodate is one of the main cities on Japan's northernmost island, Hokkaido. Admire the 334m-high Mount Hakodate that looms over the town; ride the aerial ropeway gondola to the mountain's summit for Michelin-starred views of the nightscape. At its base is Motomachi, a neighbourhood of steep streets with Western-style, early-20th-century buildings. Pay a visit the grand Old Public Hall of Hakodate Ward which was built in 1910. Stop by Hakodate Asaichi morning market to taste the Kaisendon local delicacy – a bowl of white rice topped with fresh seafood. Hop on the city tram to see the unique star-shaped Fort Goyokaku or take a train ride to Yunokawa Onsen hot spring resort to soak in the therapeutic waters.
