Immerse yourself in culture at Calouste Gulbenkian Museum and National Museum of Contemporary Art, or enjoy the colourful marine life at Oceanarium. Take a vintage tram ride through the city's cobbled streets, admiring Jerónimos Monastery and Belém Tower on the way. Lanzarote, Canary Islands
The ship drops anchor today on the easternmost Canary Island of Lanzarote; famous for its year-round warm weather, stunning beaches, crystal-clear waters, and amazing volcanic landscapes. Admire Castillo San Gabriel and Castillo San Jose which form the backdrop to Arrecife harbour. The beautiful golden sand of Arrecife’s Playa del Reducto is ideal for a morning's sunbathing, or take a stroll along the seafront promenade to the peaceful Playa del Cable. White-washed villas, beaches, and dive centres await discovery in Puerto del Carmen; the resort also hosts the Fiesta de la Virgen del Carmen during the first two weeks of August. Witness Cesar Manrique's unique Jardin de Cactus, Jameos del Agua, and Mirador del Rio. Explore the atmospheric seven-kilometre-long Cueva de Los Verdes that arose from the eruption of Volcán de la Corona 4,000+ years ago. Venture inland to explore the unique landscape of Timanfaya National Park's fire mountains.
7
Gran Canaria, Canary Islands
The Canary island of Gran Canaria is famous for its black lava and white sand beaches; from bustling Playa del Ingles and Puerto Rico to quieter San Augustin and Puerto de Mogan. Surfing fans can make a beeline for Pozo Izquierdo for some great waves and adventurers can hike at the Jurassic-like Caldera de Bandama or climb up to Roque Nublo for 360-degree island vistas. The capital of La Palmas is a Mecca for duty-free shopping, its historic Vegueta old town, Las Canteras urban beach, and marine life at Poema del Mar; while the nearby Jardin Botanico Canario Viera y Clavijo is the perfect escape. The awe-inspiring Dunas de Maspalomas are a must-see sight or step back to pre-Hispanic times at Cueva Pintada Museum. Get up close to wildlife and see dolphins, turtles, seals, toucans, and orchids at Palmitos Park – the biggest zoological park in the Canary Islands - or swap seals for slides at Aqualand Maspalomas Water Park, a ten-minute ride away.
8
Tenerife, Canary Islands
Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands. The island is dominated by the dormant volcano Mount Teide; hop on a cable car to marvel at the views or take a hike along the trail. Tenerife is also known for its famous Carnaval de Santa Cruz with its spectacular parades, music, dancing, and colourful costumes. The island’s capital, Santa Cruz, is home to Auditorio de Tenerife, Museum of Fine Arts, and Museum of Nature and Man. The UNESCO-listed colonial city of San Cristobal de la Laguna is well worth a visit too.
9
Funchal, Madeira
It is very easy to see why Madeira has gained the name of 'The Garden Island'. Lush greenery with an array of tropical fruits, this island is a favourite on many cruise itineraries. Take gondola ride to the mountain village of Monte to experience some of the most breathtaking views of the island, then take the thrilling way down on a local toboggan, winding and bending over the cobbles; this is something you won’t want to miss. For wine lovers, venture out into the vineyards and experience some of the famous wine of the region.
